Pita Break Zero Low Low OneBun Review + Hummus and Feta Veggie Sandwich

Out of all the products at the grocery store, I think bread is one of the most confusing products in terms of nutrition. The saying “looks can be deceiving” has never been truer. A loaf may look like it’s full of the good stuff, but when you turn it over and look at the label, often times “whole grain flour” isn’t even the first ingredient! And even when you do find a loaf of real whole grain bread, it’s often full of preservatives and unpronounceable additives.

But recently Ozery’s Pita Break contacted me and told me about their new Zero Low Low OneBuns, which come in two varieties (sprouted wheat/light rye), and are:

  • Free of added sugar
  • Low in sodium
  • Low in fat
  • Free of artificial preservatives
  • A source of fibre
  • A source of iron

What I liked most about these buns though is their ingredient lists:

Sprouted wheat: Sprouted whole grain wheat flour, filtered water, wheat gluten, yeast, cultured wheat starch, citric acid, sea salt, guar gum. Contains wheat. May contain sesame seeds.

Light rye: Whole grain whole wheat flour including the germ, filtered water, light rye flour, sour dough (organic unbleached flour, filtered water, yeast, sea salt, sunflower oil), yeast, cultured wheat starch, citric acid, sea salt. Contains wheat. May contain sesame seeds.

Nothing funky in there right? All pronounceable, whole food ingredients that you would probably use in your own home baking. Now that’s a bread product I can get on board with!

So how did they taste? A lot better than some of those other cardboardy thin buns I’ve tried. Overall I really liked them, and they make a perfect vehicle for sandwiches, burgers, and even mini pizzas. This sandwich is one of my latest favourites:

Hummus and feta veggie sandwich
Nut free, egg free, vegan option

Makes 4

4 buns (or 8 slices of bread)
3/4 cup of hummus
3 oz. feta cheese (replace with olives for vegan option)
2 medium carrots, in thin slices
1/2 cucumber, sliced
1 small avocado, mashed
Optional: lettuce, tomato

Assemble and enjoy!

  2. This pita bread sounds wonderful and the sandwich looks fantastic! My favorite healthy bread is Ezekiel bread. So yummy!

  4. I’ve seen these at the grocery store but have never flipped them over to investigate further. I’m happy to read such a positive review though because they seem fantastic for those busy days!

  5. Never tried this brand! I agree bread is definitely the most confusing to people! Especially when it can be a tad misleading.

      Exactly – I hate how some breads label themselves as whole wheat, when really they’re not 100% whole wheat. It’s so confusing!

  7. Your sandwich looks SO pretty! I love that you added carrots to it. I don’t know why I rarely add carrots to my sandwiches when I am pretty much OBSESSED with them ;)

  8. Bread is definitely tricky. What I really want to do is be able to make my own so that I now what’s going in it, but that’ll require me to actually get over my fear of working with yeast, which is definitely going to require a bit of a pep talk :lol:

      I wish I had more time to bake my own! Actually that’s just an excuse – it’s really not that bad to make it. I really should start doing it more! I will if you will. Deal?

  9. I agree! I can’t tell you how long I’ve stood in the bread aisle deliberating over which one to buy! Over the summer, I gave up and started buying some of the sprouted loaves from the bakery at one of my favorite grocery stores…only has like 6 ingredients and it’s perfectly seedy and nutty!

    Love the sandwich! It’s been forever since I’ve made one…and even longer since I’ve combined avocado and hummus…such a great combo!

      That’s so awesome the bakery at your grocery store makes SPROUTED bread. I don’t think my grocery store is that progressive yet haha.

  10. We just got sandwich buns like that too here- Well called sandwich thins or something? I’ve been skeptical to give them a go though!

    My favourite healthy bread is this brand called Burgen…it’s so good, all you need is a dab of butter!

      I’m not a fan of most sandwich thins because a) They are full of crap ingredients and b) They’re not satisfying. But I really like the awesome ingredient list in these!

  11. That is my biggest pet peeve in the bread aisle too! I tend to try and buy from our local farmers market because we have a great bakery that uses whole grains and no preservatives. But sometimes that doesn’t work out of course and then I really like the whole wheat oatmeal by pepperidge farms!

      That’s amazing you have that bakery at your market! For some reason I never think to buy bread at the farmers’ market. I need to scope out mine for a good bakery like that!
