Fresh on Bloor

Hi everyone! I hope you all had good weekends. Mine was pretty busy. I actually spent all of yesterday working at the Gluten Free Market event with my old boss at Organic Works – it was go go go all day until about 3 pm and I crashed when I got home! Friday evening was pretty exciting too because I went into Toronto to visit my friend Andrea and her roommate.

And guess where we went for dinner? Fresh on Bloor! If you don’t follow me regularly, you probably don’t understand why I was so excited about this. It’s because I’ve tried to eat at the Fresh on Spadina location for years with no luck because they always say it’s too risky with my nut allergies. But the Fresh on Bloor location must have safer procedures in their kitchen because when I called their manager, she said it shouldn’t be an issue.

I was still pretty paranoid about eating there though, so I annoyed our waiter with tons of questions about what menu items were the safest, where they stored their peanut sauce, blah blah blah. Luckily he was amazing and checked with the kitchen a million times to answer my questions. I didn’t grab his name, but if you ever go to Fresh on Bloor and get served by a tall waiter with dark hair and a mustache, give him a killer tip!

So on to the food at Fresh on Bloor.

I started with a Detoxifier that was made with kale, spinach, parsley, celery, and apple. I’ve never had such a green juice before, and I was scared to take my first sip, but I actually liked it! It was really refreshing.

For my entree I decided to go for a rice bowl, since you all know how much I adore those. After a lot of deliberation, I got the macro greens bowl that came with steamed greens and broccoli, bean sprouts, steamed sweet potato, brown basmati rice, grilled tofu, and tahini sauce.

I’m not going to lie… I didn’t love this. It was pretty bland and even the sauce didn’t add much flavour. The whole time I was eating it, I couldn’t help thinking how much better the rice bowls at Kindfood are!

It’s funny because all these years I’ve totally built up Fresh in my mind, thinking it must be the greatest restaurant ever, and it turns out I actually prefer the place I’ve been going to all along. It just goes to show that sometimes the best things are what we already have!

Have you ever been to Fresh restaurant?

Have you ever been really excited for something, only to be disappointed by it?

  1. I would LOVE to visit a Fresh restaurant. You can take me there when I come visit you girls in Ontario. A detox green juice sounds amazing right now. I accidentally drank too much vodka on Saturday night and now I have fatty liver disease/alcohol poisoning. Hahaha

  2. I’m glad you finally got to try it! I love Fresh, but I’m dying to try Kindfood!!

  3. your juice and dish both look fantastic!

  4. Yeah the macro bowl is pretty bland! We gotta go back together and I’ll show you the ropes!!!

  5. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — you are BRAVE when it comes to eating out, girl. Even the mention of nuts is enough to keep me away, especially since the anxiety usually takes all the fun out of it. Sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your meal after all that trouble, though — maybe you just ordered the wrong dish?

I’ve got to admit, I was TERRIFIED to eat there. But my strong desire to eat there overrode that fear haha. Plus the manager on the phone told me that people with nut allergies DO eat there and they’ve never had an incident.

  6. I am so glad you got to try Fresh! But sad (hey I rhymed) you were disappointed with the macro greens ^ it’s my favorite!! I usually get extra broccoli rather than bean sprouts and also add tofu. So sorry you didn’t fully enjoy.

Lol it wasn’t bad per se… I guess we just have different tastes. ;) I can’t wait to go back and try another bowl though!

  7. I was recommended Fresh on a trip to TDot last year, but never made it. I can only imaging how frustrating it must be to worry about allergies at new restaurants. And you are right… sometimes things (esp. stores and restaurants) are so hyped up that they end up disappointing.
    Happy Monday!!

I think overall Fresh is good, but I just ordered the wrong dish. I’m sure it’s worth a visit next time you’re in Toronto!

  8. That’s too bad that you didn’t love your dish, especially because I know how much you’ve wanted to eat there! Maybe just a different one next time will do the trick? I’d happily go back to Kindfood for a Buddha Bowl though, I’d have trouble finding a restaurant able to beat that!

    • Chelsea

Yeah I’ll definitely give Fresh another try soon and just order a different bowl. And in the meantime I’ll happily enjoy my Kindfood haha.

  9. Dohhh I’m sorry the restaurant didn’t live up to your expectations! I have been there before with a place, actually a similar restaurant around these parts! I finally went earlier this summer and the whole time was thinking, “mehh.” That’s good the juice was okay though, you might remember my past experience with juice so I am a bit weary with them haha

  10. that is always the worst when you expect so much flavor and it just doesn’t deliver. bummer indeed! at least good company right?

  11. When I was at U of T I used to go to this Fresh restaurant ALL THE TIME. Not too sound negative or anything but they recently changed the menu and things there have sort of went downhill lately. The last couple visits have left me unimpressed. But I swear, it used to be amazing!

  12. I always get pumped about things only to realize that they aren’t really my favorite and sometimes even not that great at all! I seem to always get excited about movies and then leave kind of “blah,” haha. I’ve learned to lower my expectations and then things are typically much better ;)

    • Chelsea

I have that same kind of experience with movies all the time too. Recently it was with the third Hangover movie… I should have learned from my mistake after seeing the second one. Sequels just aren’t ever as good!

  13. Danielle @ Labelsarefortincans

Thank you for pointing out that Fresh can often be bland! It used to be a lot better 5 years ago I think… Now I can’t say the same!

But glad you finally got to try it! I love the Naam here in Vancouver – it sounds a lot like Kind Foods with really delicious and flavourful rice bowls.

    • Chelsea

You’re not the first person who has said that… that’s interesting.

I’m dying to visit Vancouver sometime soon. Naam will definitely go on my list!

  14. Such a great description- I’ll keep that in mind when I go to Canada ;)

I always find with trips, restaurants, holidays, etc- The more you build it up, the greater risk of disappointment. When I went to Japan I had it in my head that it was this amazing place with this and that and was really disappointed- not that it was bad or anything but I had put it on such a high pedal stool!

    • Chelsea

I know, I always build up everything in my mind too. I’ve got to learn to lower my expectations so that I can always walk away from something happy!

  15. Angela

I live right next door to Fresh on Bloor! (well, 30 sec walk) .. I always wanted to try there but I was put off by the really expensive menu .. good to know I haven’t been missing out on much!

    • Chelsea

Apparently other items on the menu are good – I just chose the wrong item! I’ve heard the quinoa onion rings and veggie burgers are great. :)

  16. I hate “let downs” so I’m sorry it didn’t live up to your expectations. It almost makes me prefer meals out that are unplanned because when you are unexpectedly “wowed” it is more enjoyable than having your heart set on something that isn’t as good as the hype. Maybe it was just the rice bowl? I did really enjoy my wrap! I’m glad you FINALLY got to go though even if it didn’t surpass your wishes.

    • Chelsea

Yeah I think it was just the dish I ordered. Your wrap looked good, and I’ve heard the burgers and quinoa onion rings are awesome too. Guess that just means I need to try it again!

  17. This has happened to me before also when I have built up a restaurant in my head. I will order something that sounds fabulous and end up leaving thinking “I could have made that much better (and cheaper)” haha.

  18. Yay, I am glad you were able to try out Fresh! There is a location right by me! It has been a long time since I have been!

  19. ahhh man I hate when you build it up to be something awesome and it isn’t! but at least you had great service, that’s what really matters!

I didnt’ know you were so allergic to nuts, scary!
I hope the gluten free event was fun, I think those kind of things are a blast!

  20. That Detoxifier looks really good and it sounds quite refreshing. I love juices like that! I’m also a huge fan of rice bowls :) Stir-fry or a mix veggie dish over quinoa or brown rice is one of my go-to dinners!

  21. Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli

Aww, big fat bummer! I hate it when the anticipation of something ends in disappointment! I have quite a few experiences in that realm since I have a tendency to OBSESS over foodie items I see on blogs and just HAVE to search them out! Haha!

    • Chelsea

Haha same here! I’ve definitely been disappointed by a few items that I’ve seen on blogs. Like collard wraps! They look pretty, but man is the taste of collard greens overpowering. :P

  22. I love Fresh, but I have certainly had some disappointing meals there. It all depends on what you order!

Still have to try Kindfood- I love me a good rice bowl!

  23. Chelsea

Well Suzanne and I are planning on organizing a meet up at Kindfood in December, and you will definitely be invited! ;)
