Garlic’s of London

Thanks to the craziness of the first week of classes, I totally forgot to post about an amazing restaurant experience I had last week at Garlic’s of London (website).

Some of you may remember Garlic’s of London as the place that sent me to the hospital. Last year my friend Lauren and I went there for dinner, and upon ordering, I immediately told the waitress about my allergies. She assured me it would be no problem. But as I was eating my beet and goat cheese salad, I noticed that the goat cheese was crunchy, so I asked the waitress about it. After checking with the kitchen she returned and told me there were pecans in the goat cheese, and I ended up going to the hospital.

Needless to say I was skeptical about trying out this place again. But it has been given such great reviews, especially for its use of local foods, that I felt it deserved a second chance. Luckily this time the waitress was extremely helpful and assured me my meal would be safe. I sure hoped she was right as I tore into a piece of their house made bread.

I had 3 slices to make up for my lighter lunch of two appetizers. I started with this vegan corn chowder – it was incredible!

I followed it with an heirloom tomato salad with goat cheese, mixed greens, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil. The tomatoes were so flavourful!

Garlic’s of London has definitely redeemed itself. I guess my bad experience there was just a fluke, because this meal and the service were awesome. They rotate their menu seasonally here, so I can’t wait to go back and try their new menu soon!

Have you ever had a really bad restaurant experience where your food allergies, intolerances, or preferences were ignored?

What do you like to order at restaurants when you want a lighter meal?

  1. That looks deliicous! I would have been so p'd off if that happened to me! Fortunately I don't have any allergies/intolerances that I know of but it irritates me when waiters/waitresses don't fall special requests like no mayo in sandwiches.

  2. I usually order apps if I want a lighter meal! I cannot believe that happened to you! I would be sooo ticked!

  3. That does look quite delish! If I want a lighter meal, I order appetizers, a salad sans copious amounts of dressing, or a broth-based soup

  4. glad the restaurant redeemed itself! that corn chowder looks gooooood. it's chilly out today and warm soup sounds great.

  5. Can I just say that I had no clue you went to school in London? I thought you were from Canada!

  6. Mmm, that looks delicious! I generally choose fish if I want something lighter, and substitute the fries or potatoes for extra veggies or something like that :) restaurants should really be extremely careful about people with allergies! I have a friend who asked for the beef not to be included in her dish for religious reasons and was asked by the waitress to 'just pick it out'. She was not impressed!

  7. Luckily I don't have any food allergies :-) but I have a lot of friends who do and I really feel for ya. I usually get a regular meal when I'm not too hungry and then either eat it all or box up leftover haha

  8. I am jealous you are a nutrition student! I wish I had studied that in college! Love the blog!

  9. I don't have any food allergies — but i would be so angry if there was some kind of screw up with my food that landed me in the hospital! I never even give restaurants a second chance if I get bad service. I hold a grudge, haha. vegan corn chowder sounds amazing! Usually some kind of combination of soups, salads, or sides is the way I go for a light meal.

  10. Gosh, a lot of times I think they just say, "yeah, it's fine, it only has blah blah blah in it" without ever checking the ingredients. I feel like screaming, "ASK!!". If you don't work in the kitchen then ya don't know!!What an awful first experience!!!!!Glad the 2nd time was better!

  11. When I want to eat light when going out, I usually ask for whatever vegetables/fruit they have and order a salad with dressing on the side.
